Maslenitsa (Масленица)
The word comes from the Rssian word Maslo (Масло) which means butter. Usually the freshly baked pancakes are stacked in a pile and смазаны with butter. They are served with jam, mushrooms, tvorog or other things. Not everybody can afford caviar (икра) :))
This week is Maslenitsa in Russia, and I would like to share with you a little about this tradition that we have.
On Maslenitsa we not only eat pancakes, there are celebrations on town squares where Russian people have traditional games (like climbing up a pole, or swimming in the frozen river, fighting with heavy 'bean' bags and sharing food. But the most exciting part is the saying goodbye to winter. The straw doll dressed in bright clothes is burned as a symbol of winter that gives place to Spring. In Russian culture the Winter (Zima) and the Spring (Vesna) are both female and are quite jealous of each other. There is also a religious meaning behind this tradition, but I'm not going to tell you about it. You can read it here: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Maslenitsa
